Virginia Beach S.P.C.A. Adoption policy

The Virginia Beach SPCA strives to find permanent homes for every adoptable animal in our care. In order to achieve this goal, we need to know about you and your lifestyle, so we can properly match you with an ideal pet. We do not mean to be intrusive in any way, and we hope you recognize that even the greatest animals do not make the best pet for everyone. Let us be a resource in helping you meet your match.

Adoption Procedure:

1. Come to the shelter at 3040 Holland Rd. Stroll through our small animal room, cattery, and kennels. Read the cage cards located on each cage or kennel.
2. If you find an animal you are interested in and have read the information about the animal, ask a cattery or kennel attendant to assist you. They will remove the animal from the cage and escort you all to a visitation room.
3. Spend some time interacting with the animal outside the cage. Ask questions. Be sure this is the right animal for you.
4. If you would like to fill out an application for the animal, let your attendant know. They'll get you started.
5. You'll take the completed application to the front desk for review. A valid picture ID and proof of residency (utility bill, check book, etc.) is required. 6. If you have other animals, please bring your veterinarian's name and phone number, or current vaccination records on your current pets.
7. If you rent, please have your landlord's name and number with you. Know the terms of your lease regarding pets.
8. If you own your own home, please bring proof of ownership (deed, mortgage payment, closing statement, etc).
9. All household members must visit with the animal before the adoption can be finalized.
10. Anyone wishing to adopt a dog or puppy that currently has a dog or puppy at home must do a dog introduction at the shelter. This is arranged AFTER the application has been approved.
11. All animals adopted from the VBSPCA will be spayed or neutered. After surgery, you will attend a brief post-op care class. After class, your animal will be released to you.

Interested in volunteering???

We have all kinds of volunteer opportunities!

Junior Volunteering (13-17)
Junior volunteers assist kennel and cattery staff in the day-to-day operations of the shelter. Cleaning and customer service are a major part of the junior volunteer's duties. Although junior volunteers handle animals frequently, there is very little "playtime". Interested teens should fill out an application, which you can print from the http://www.vbspca.com/ or pick up from the shelter. Orientations are by invitation only, in the order we receive applications; orientations are held three times a year. AFTER you apply, you will be sent your scheduled date (approximately 3-4 weeks before the orientation). Many teens between the ages of 13-17 are required to do community service in order to fulfill school obligations. We would love to have them complete their hours either within the shelter or for the shelter in their community. Since space is limited within the shelter, many teens opt to hold food drives, dog washes, and other projects specifically geared to help the Virginia Beach SPCA. If you would like to hold an SPCA sponsored event, volunteer within the shelter, or have any other ideas of ways that you can help our homeless critters, please contact our Youth Programs director at youthprograms@vbspca.com, our Junior Volunteer Coordinator at cat@vbspca.com, or by phone 427-0070 ext 13 with comments or questions.

Adult Volunteering (18 and over)

Our adult volunteers are the backbone of our organization. All of our fundraising events require the help of volunteers, sometimes hundreds of them! Adult volunteers have many choices in how they would like to help out the VBSPCA, including: clerical, front desk help, adoption counseling, dog walking, cattery or kennel help, foster homes, PetSmart adoption center, tour guides, Humane Education readers, pet therapy, beer pouring, photography, event planning, wildlife program; the list goes on and on. Maybe you have your own idea about how you'd like to help. Orientations are held monthly.*Note that all adult volunteers must attend an orientation and must be willing to pay the $20 volunteer fee at orientation, which covers the cost of volunteer shirt and becoming a member of the VBSPCA. Contact our Outreach Director at outreach@vbspca.com to learn more or by phone at 427-0070 ext. 41.
